The Abbasid dirham was primarily made of silver, a key feature that distinguished it from the gold-based dinar and copper coins in use during the same period.

The obverse typically featured inscriptions in Arabic, These often included the name of the caliph (the reigning ruler), sometimes the date of issue, and phrases like "There is no god but Allah."

The reverse commonly includes the shahada "There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the messenger of Allah", and sometimes the mint name and location.

Coins were minted in various cities across the empire, including Baghdad, Damascus, Cairo, and Kufa, which had its own distinctive characteristics depending on the region.
